Fans flash cards in support of Seattle Sounders FC before the start of the semi-final playoff game against Dallas FC
Futbol (Soccer to most Americans) may be the world’s most popular sport and a secondary, or even tertiary sport in the United States, but Seattle defies that way of thinking. The Seattle Sounders FC regularly outdraws the Seattle Mariners baseball team even though baseball is supposed to be America’s pastime. ( Sounders 2014 average attendance: 43,734; Seattle Mariners average attendance: 25, 485).
In contrast, James and I attended a futbol game in Shanghai, this summer, and the attendance at the Shanghai Dongya F.C. match couldn’t have been more than 3,000 fans.
A final walk through a doomed neighborhood.
I can hear a sad, old jazz melody playing in my head as I write this; 15 hours until I leave China for the final time. It has been a great 14 months, eye-opening, mind-changing, rewarding and energizing. I’m grateful to my wonderful wife for providing this opportunity and I’m looking forward to the next chapter. Zài jiàn. 再見/再见
A man leaves after getting a haircut and a shave from the barber outside the China Post on Weifang Xi Lu and Pudong Lu. I have not noticed very much facial hair during my time in Shanghai, but this guys mustache makes up in style for what the city lacks in quantity.
Man washes his car on a Sunday afternoon.
Shanghai has a long tradition of wearing pajamas in public
and despite an official government program to eliminate this comfort trend during the 2010 World Expo, some folks still persist in exercising their right to be comfortable, like this man washing his car on Sunday afternoon. Although not as popular as it once was, you still see a number of (mostly) men strolling the streets in their sleepwear, particularly on Sundays, a day many have off from work.
it is 2 PM on Tuesday and a group of men sit on a bare mattress and play cards in this neighborhood south of the Bund. In the makeshift structures to the left other men sleep. The old neighborhoods are disappearing rapidly and most residents have been relocated to modern apartments with indoor kitchens and bathrooms, something lacking in these old homes. But not everyone is gone; some are elderly long-time residents who don’t want to leave the [place that is home, but many are migrants from rural China, drawn to Shanghai for work tearing down old neighborhoods and building the luxury, high-rise condos that are displacing them. Catch 44.
*There are large gaps in the 365-Photo-Project, but the exist online only. I have thousands of pictures, shot every day, but Adobe Lightroom 5 crashed disrupted my workflow.I’m unable to import and process my pictures as I have been doing. I’m trying various work arounds, none ideal. I am slowly working to process the pictures to fill the gap (between 252 and today).
