Today’s adventure on the Shanghai Farewell Tour was a trip to the South Bund Fabric Market to see about getting get a couple of pieces of clothing custom-made, something we had been talking about doing, but had been putting off; nothing like a deadline to spur one to action! Between the taxi and the market entrance we stopped as the jewelry merchants spread out their offerings. I bought two small, silver bracelets, and a necklace and some earrings for Melinda, all from the same woman. As she was putting the jewelry in a bag she pointed to herself and said, very softly, “Tibet.”
I replied, “Meiguoren.” (American)
She smiled, glanced around and said even more softly, ‘Dali Lama?”
I answered her with a big smile and a thumbs up, “Dali Lama!”
We parted friends.
