Day 140: Backstreets

People take a shortcut through a downtown Boise alley.

People take a shortcut through a downtown Boise alley.

In Beijing I wander the back lanes and alleys of the hutong neighborhoods, lined with small businesses and homes. In Shanghai, the lanes and alleys of the shikumen neighborhoods are more private and guarded, entry by a laowai is not common, or particularly welcome. In Boise, the alleys in the downtown area are lined by trash bins and the back doors of restaurants, where kitchen workers step out for a smoke and a phone call. This alley, running north / south, splitting the block between Bannock & Jefferson Streets has a fair amount of foot traffic and, between 8th & 9th Streets, some pretty good artwork covering the old brick walls.
