Day Fifty-One: That Way

Getting directions at the newsstand

Getting directions at the newsstand

A women receives directions from a traffic safety officer on Fenyang Road near Dongping Lu. That is the officer’s scooter parked at the curb facing against traffic. The officer hung out at the newsstand where displays of magazines and toys block the sidewalk, forcing pedestrians to walk in the street. Not an uncommon scene in old Shanghai where sidewalks are often narrow and just as frequently taken over by roaming merchandise vendors, or commandeered by mom & pop restaurants and covered with small, plastic tables and stools; the important thing is to step into the street with a discreet glance and then hope one of the millions of silent, electric scooters doesn’t run you down.
